August 13, 2009—A study reported in The British Medical Journal concluded that Yaz users are at an increased risk for experiencing blood clots compared to users of other birth control pills. The study examined 1,524 patients on a birth control pill and 1,760 who were not. The risk of blood clots increased fivefold among women who took a birth control pill containing drospirenone. Drospirenone is a synthetic progestin contained in Yaz. |
Bayer to Spent $20 Million to Correct Misleading Advertising for Yaz |

February 17, 2009—Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals agreed to spend $20 million to correct misleading advertising regarding Yaz. Advertisements promoting Yaz have been criticized for failing to disclose known safety risks of the drug. The popular birth control pill had sales of $616 million in 2008. The campaign to correct the misleading advertising was prompted by a warning letter sent to Bayer by the FDA's division of drug marketing, advertising and communications. |
